- The check is standard practice everywhere and a legal requirement in several states.
- If your documents are locked inside, say so on the phone rather than at the door.
- A locksmith who does not ask is a warning sign, not a convenience.
- A landlord cannot have a tenant's door opened without a court order in most places.
Why the check exists
A locksmith opens things that were locked on purpose. The only thing separating that from a burglary is knowing that the person asking is entitled to be inside.
Several states make the check a licensing condition and require the record to be kept for a set period. Where it is not written into law it is still the professional standard, and any locksmith who intends to keep working follows it.
It also protects you. Your neighbour cannot have your door opened. Your ex partner cannot have your car opened. A stranger who watched you leave cannot claim your address.
So when a locksmith asks, they are doing the job properly. A locksmith who opens a door for anybody who asks will one day open yours for somebody else.
For a house
The simplest combination is photo identification that already shows that address. A driving licence is ideal because it does both jobs at once.
Where the licence shows an old address, bring photo identification plus one of a lease or tenancy agreement, a utility bill, a bank or mortgage statement, a council or property tax notice, or a piece of addressed post. Most of these can be produced after the door is open, and locksmiths generally accept that.
If you rent and your name is on nothing, call the landlord or managing agent first. They can often authorise it by phone or attend, and many are obliged to help.
If your name genuinely is not on anything and nobody can vouch for you, a locksmith may decline. That is not them being difficult. It is the same rule that protects your own front door.
For a vehicle
Photo identification plus one of the vehicle registration, the title, an insurance card or a lease or finance agreement.
The plate and the vehicle identification number will be checked against whichever document you produce.
If everything is locked in the car, say so when you call. Most locksmiths will open it and then check the documents before handing anything over or leaving, and will record that they did.
A hire car, a company vehicle or a car registered to a partner all need a short explanation and usually a phone call to whoever it is registered to. Have that number ready.
Expect the same for a motorcycle, a trailer, a boat and a storage unit. A storage facility will usually want their own manager present, and that is normal.
The one situation that overrides all of this
A child or an animal locked in a vehicle in the heat.
Call emergency services first, then a locksmith. Nobody will ask for paperwork while an interior is climbing past a hundred and twenty five degrees, and no locksmith will delay for it.
If you arrive at that situation as a bystander and the occupant looks distressed, unresponsive, or has stopped sweating, do not wait for anybody. Break the window furthest from them, cover the edge with clothing, and get them out and into shade.
This is the only category of call where the ordinary order is reversed, and every locksmith in the trade would tell you the same.
What a professional will refuse
Knowing the refusals tells you a great deal about who you are dealing with.
A landlord asking for a tenant's door to be opened or the locks changed to exclude them. In most places a landlord may not enter at will and certainly may not lock a tenant out without a court order.
Anything in the middle of a domestic dispute or a separation where two people both claim the property. A locksmith is not a court and will tell both parties to obtain an order or a police standby.
A repossession without a contract with the lienholder and documentation of the security interest.
Any job where the person cannot show identification and objects to being asked.
If you are the one being refused for a legitimate reason, the fix is usually a document rather than a different locksmith. Somebody willing to skip the check is not somebody you want holding a picking set at your door.
What you should ask them for
The check runs both ways and you are entitled to the same confidence.
Ask for the legal business name and the address, then search it while you are still on the phone.
Ask for the licence number in a state that licenses locksmiths, and ask to see it on arrival.
Ask for one firm total including the service call and any parts, before anybody is dispatched, and confirm that number before they touch the door.
Expect a marked vehicle, a technician who identifies themselves, card payment and a written invoice carrying the business name and the work performed.
A business that meets all of that is one worth saving in your phone before you need it again.
Common questions
What if my identification is locked inside
Say so when you call. Most locksmiths will open the property or vehicle and then check the documents before leaving, recording that they did so.
Can a locksmith refuse to open my own door
Yes, if you cannot show a reasonable connection to the address. It is the same rule that stops somebody else having your door opened, and a locksmith who never refuses is one to avoid.
Is the identification check a legal requirement
In several states it is a licensing condition with a record keeping period attached. Everywhere else it is the professional standard, which is why every reputable locksmith does it anyway.
Can my landlord have my locks changed
In most jurisdictions no, not without a court order. Changing locks to exclude a tenant is generally unlawful, and a professional locksmith will decline.
Do they keep a copy of my identification
They record the type of identification, the document shown, the address or plate and the time. Some photograph documents where state law allows it. That record protects you as much as them.
