How We List and Rank Locksmiths
Who runs this directory, how the order is set, and how to check what you read here.
The short answer. Locksmith Listing is a free directory of 9,814 locksmith businesses across the United States. We are not a locksmith and we do not do locksmith work. Paid Premium listings show first and are tagged Premium. Every other listing is ordered by the same rules, and no one can pay to change them.
Who Runs This Site
Locksmith Listing is an independent directory that has been online since 2020. We list businesses, write free guides for customers and run free courses for the trade. When you call a business listed here, you are dealing with that business and not with us.
How Listings Are Ordered
City and category pages sort listings in this order.
- Premium listings. These are paid. 3 businesses hold a Premium listing today, and each one carries a gold Premium tag.
- Verified listings. The phone number we hold matches the one on the business's own live public profile. 7,455 of 9,814 listings are verified.
- Original members. Businesses that have been listed since the directory launched. 4,587 listings carry this tag.
- Review standing. A score that weighs the star rating against how many reviews stand behind it. A 5.0 from three reviews does not beat a 4.8 from four hundred. We use it only to sort and never show it.
- Hours and address. A listing with published hours comes before one without, then a listing with a street address.
- Name. Last of all, A to Z, so the order stays the same from one day to the next.
A listing lower down is not a bad business. It is one we have less proof about so far.
Does Anyone Pay to Rank?
Yes, in one place only. The Premium plan on the plans page puts a business at the top of its city and category pages, and the three Premium listings also appear on the homepage. That is the only paid placement. Verified tags, badges, review standing and the top rated picks on the homepage are not for sale.
What the Tags and Badges Mean
- Premium. A paid placement.
- Verified. The phone number matches the business's own live public profile.
- Original member. Listed since the directory launched.
- 24 Hour. The business's published hours say it is open 24 hours every day.
- Permanently closed. The business's own profile says it has closed.
- Safety Screened. An identity check. The phone matches the business's own claimed profile, the profile is not marked closed, and an address or website backs it up. It is not a license, insurance or background check.
- Top Rated. At least 4.6 stars from at least 25 public reviews, and in the top quarter of its own city.
- Elite Pro. Safety Screened and Top Rated, with at least 150 reviews and published hours.
The full rules for each badge are on the certification page.
What We Do Not Check
We do not check licenses, insurance or criminal records, and a listing is not a recommendation. Before you let anyone work on your locks, read how to check if a locksmith is licensed and get the total price in writing.
How to Report a Wrong Listing
If a phone number, address or business is wrong, call (866) 348-4652 or use the contact page. Tell us the business name, the city and what is wrong. If you own the business, the claim form lets you fix your own listing. A person checks every change before it goes live, and we can remove a listing that is wrong or closed.
Common Questions
Can a locksmith pay to show up first?
Yes. A Premium listing is a paid plan, and Premium listings show first on city and category pages. They carry a gold Premium tag so you can tell them apart. Below them, no one can pay to move up.
Can a locksmith buy a badge?
No. Safety Screened, Top Rated and Elite Pro are worked out on the same rules for every listing. The plan a business is on is not part of those rules.
Do you check licenses or insurance?
No. We do not check licenses, insurance or backgrounds. Ask the locksmith for their license and the total price before any work starts.
Who writes the ratings?
The ratings come from public reviews left by customers. We do not write reviews and we do not change the numbers.
How do I report a wrong listing?
Call (866) 348-4652 or use the contact page. Tell us the business name, the city and what is wrong. A person checks it before anything changes.
