- Nearly every price has two parts. A service call fee for getting there, and the labour and parts for the job itself.
- Nights, weekends and holidays typically add 50 to 100 percent. That is normal and should be quoted before anybody is dispatched.
- An advertised price under 30 dollars is almost always a bait price that changes on arrival.
- A real locksmith will give you one firm total on the phone and confirm it before touching your door.
What you are actually paying for
A locksmith price is built from three things and it helps to hear them separately.
The first is the service call. That covers driving to you, the fuel, the vehicle, the insurance and the time. It typically runs 35 to 100 dollars and it exists whether the job takes five minutes or an hour. Mobile work is mostly driving, and a business that does not charge for it does not stay open.
The second is labour. Picking a lock, rekeying cylinders, cutting a key, programming a transponder. Rates commonly run 50 to 150 dollars an hour, higher for automotive programming because the equipment costs thousands of dollars.
The third is parts. A basic deadbolt is 25 to 60 dollars. A commercial grade one is 90 to 250. A car key blank with a transponder is 20 to 120 before anybody programs it.
When a locksmith gives you one number on the phone they have added those three together. That is the number to hold them to.
Typical prices by job
These are common ranges across the United States in 2026. Your area, the time of day and the hardware all move them, so treat them as a sanity check rather than a quote.
House lockout, daytime, 75 to 150 dollars. Same lockout at two in the morning, 150 to 300.
Car lockout, 75 to 200 dollars. Higher on a vehicle with no accessible door cylinder or with a deadlocked system.
Rekeying, 20 to 40 dollars per cylinder plus the service call. Rekeying six doors in one visit is far cheaper per door than rekeying one, because you only pay the call out once.
Deadbolt supplied and fitted, 130 to 300 dollars depending on grade and whether the door needs boring.
Basic car key cut and programmed, 150 to 300 dollars. A proximity fob for a newer vehicle, 250 to 500 and sometimes more.
Broken key extraction, 75 to 175 dollars. Safe opening, 150 to 400 for a straightforward job and considerably more if it has to be drilled and repaired.
Why after hours costs more
A locksmith who answers at three in the morning is running a night operation. Somebody is awake, insured and on call, and the volume of night work is a fraction of the day. Charging a premium is what makes twenty four hour availability possible at all.
Expect 50 to 100 percent above the daytime price for nights, weekends and public holidays. Some businesses charge a flat night surcharge instead.
The thing to insist on is that you hear the number before the van leaves. A night rate quoted on the phone is a business being straight with you. A night rate revealed once the technician is standing beside you is a business exploiting the fact that you are stuck.
How to tell a real quote from a bait price
The bait pattern is consistent enough that you can spot it in under a minute.
An advertised price of 15, 19 or 29 dollars is not a price for the job. It is a price for arriving. Once the technician is there the real figure appears, often several hundred dollars, and the customer pays because they are locked out and it is late.
Ask four questions before you agree to anything. What is the total, including the call out and any parts. What is the name of the business. Is the technician licensed where your state requires it, and can they give you the number. Do they take card.
A legitimate locksmith answers all four without hesitating. A bait operator gives you a vague total, a generic name like locksmith service, no licence number and a strong preference for cash.
Get the total in writing if you can, even as a text message. It costs nothing and it settles any argument later.
How to pay less
Call during business hours if the situation allows it. The same job can cost half as much at ten in the morning as it does at ten at night.
Bundle the work. If you are having the front door rekeyed, have the back door and the garage entry done in the same visit. You pay one service call instead of three.
Ask about rekeying instead of replacing. If the hardware is sound, changing which key opens it costs a fraction of new locks and gives you exactly the same result, which is that the old keys stop working.
Check your car insurance and your roadside assistance before you pay for a vehicle lockout. Many policies and many credit cards include lockout cover that people forget they have.
And if you have two working car keys already, ask whether a third can be added with an onboard procedure. On a lot of vehicles it can, and it is much cheaper than a full programming job.
Common questions
Is there a call out fee even if the locksmith cannot open it
Usually yes. The service call covers travel and time, so it is generally charged whether or not the job is completed. A good locksmith will tell you this up front and will often waive or reduce it if they could not help at all.
Why is a car key so much more expensive than a house key
A house key is a piece of cut metal. A modern car key contains a transponder chip that has to be programmed to your vehicle's immobiliser, which requires equipment costing thousands of dollars and a subscription to keep it current.
Should I pay cash
Prefer a card. A card payment creates a record, gives you a route to dispute a charge, and is a sign you are dealing with a real business. A strong push toward cash only is one of the clearest bait pricing signals.
Is a cheaper locksmith worse
Not necessarily, but a price far below everybody else usually means either an advertised figure that is not the real one, or somebody without insurance and licensing. Compare firm totals rather than advertised starting prices.
Can a locksmith open my door without damaging it
In most cases yes. Picking, bypass and decoding all leave the lock intact. Drilling is sometimes necessary on high security or damaged locks, and a professional will tell you before they drill and quote the replacement first.
