Why a car key costs so much more than a house key
A house key is a shaped piece of metal. Cutting it takes ten seconds on a machine that costs a few hundred dollars.
A car key since roughly 1998 contains a transponder, a tiny chip with no battery that answers a radio challenge from a coil around the ignition. If the answer is not on the car's approved list, the immobiliser cuts fuel or spark and the engine will not keep running.
So replacing a car key is two jobs. Cut the blade, then convince the car's immobiliser to accept a new identity. The second job needs a programming tool that costs several thousand dollars and a subscription to stay current with new models, and it needs the operator to know the procedure for that specific vehicle and year.
That is the price. Not the metal, and not the plastic. The equipment, the data and the knowledge of which of a hundred different procedures applies to your car.
Prices by key type
Plain mechanical key, no chip, common on cars before the late nineties and on many motorcycles, trailers and older trucks. Fifteen to forty dollars cut.
Transponder key, a normal looking key with a fatter head. One hundred and fifty to three hundred dollars cut and programmed.
Remote head key, a transponder key with the lock and unlock buttons built into the head. Two hundred to four hundred.
Switchblade or flip key, the same thing with a blade that folds into the fob. Two hundred and fifty to four hundred and fifty.
Proximity fob for a push button start car. Two hundred and fifty to six hundred, and on some European and luxury models seven hundred or more.
High security laser cut blades add to the cutting cost on any of these, because the blade is milled on both faces rather than notched on one edge and it needs a different machine.
Add fifty to a hundred and fifty dollars if the locksmith has to come to you rather than you visiting a shop, and add the after hours rate at night.
Locksmith or dealer
An automotive locksmith is usually the better answer and almost always the cheaper one.
A dealer generally charges more for the key itself, more for the programming, and requires the car to be at the dealership. With no working key that means a tow, which adds a hundred dollars or more and half a day.
A mobile automotive locksmith comes to the car in the car park, so there is no tow at all. That single difference is often the whole price gap.
The dealer is the right call on a small number of vehicles. Some newer platforms lock key programming behind manufacturer systems that independents cannot reach, and some very recent models have no aftermarket solution yet. A good locksmith will tell you that on the phone rather than driving out and failing.
Ask one question when you call. Have you done this year, make and model before. The answer tells you a great deal.
Have this ready before you call
The quote depends entirely on the vehicle, so a locksmith who quotes without asking is quoting a number they will change later.
Have the year, make and model. Have the trim level if you know it, because a base model and a top trim can use different key systems in the same model year.
Say whether it has a key you turn or a push button start. Say whether the key has buttons on it.
Say whether you still have a working key. This matters more than anything else on the call, because adding a spare to a car that already has a working key is a much simpler job than originating from none.
Have the vehicle identification number available, and be ready to prove the car is yours with photo identification plus registration, title or insurance. That check is required and a locksmith who skips it is one to avoid.
How to pay less
Cut a spare while you still have a working key. It is the single biggest saving available in this whole subject, usually half the price or better, and it removes the tow and the security delay entirely.
If you already have two working keys, ask whether a third can be added with an onboard procedure. Many Ford, Chrysler and General Motors vehicles of a certain era allow it with no tool at all, and an honest locksmith will tell you.
Ask about a non remote key. If you only need to start the car, a plain transponder key without the lock and unlock buttons is often significantly cheaper than a remote head key, and you can keep using the old remote separately.
Check your car insurance and any extended warranty. Key replacement cover exists and is often forgotten.
And get the quote as a total before anybody is dispatched, exactly as with any other locksmith work.
Common questions
Can a locksmith make a car key with no original
Usually yes. The blade can be cut from the vehicle identification number or by decoding the door lock, and the chip can be programmed through the diagnostic port. Expect it to cost more and take longer than copying an existing key.
Why does the car crank but not stay running with my new key
The blade is cut correctly and the immobiliser has not accepted the chip. That is a programming issue, not a cutting issue, and it is exactly what the programming half of the job fixes.
What is a security delay
Many manufacturers make the car wait ten to sixty minutes before it will accept a new key, as an anti theft measure. It is normal, it cannot be skipped, and it should be mentioned in the quote.
Is a key from an online seller cheaper
The blank is, but it still has to be cut and programmed, and the wrong blank or an unbranded chip often will not work. Most locksmiths will program a customer supplied key but few will guarantee it.
Does replacing a lost key stop the old one working
Only if the car's key list is erased and all keys reprogrammed. Say you lost the key rather than left it inside and ask for the old key to be deleted, otherwise whoever has it can still start the car.
