- The mechanical grade and the strike plate still decide how the door fails to force.

What they are actually good at
Access management. That is the honest answer and it is a real benefit.
You can give a cleaner a code that works on Tuesdays. You can let a contractor in from work. You can stop a code without collecting anything from anybody. You can see when the door was opened and by which code.
For a rental, a holiday let, an office or a house with a lot of people coming and going, that is genuinely valuable and no mechanical lock does it.
The second real benefit is that nobody hides a key outside any more. The fake rock, the mat, the meter box and the ledge above the door all disappear, and those are worse than most people realise.
The third is that nobody gets locked out for want of a key, which for households with teenagers is worth the price on its own.
What they are not
They are not stronger. A smart deadbolt is a deadbolt with a motor and a radio on it. When somebody kicks the door, what fails is the jamb around the strike plate, exactly as it would with a mechanical lock.
So the security question is unchanged. What ANSI grade is the lock. Does the bolt throw a full inch. Is the strike plate reinforced with three inch screws into the stud. Are the hinges screwed into structure. A four hundred dollar smart lock on a standard strike is worse value than a sixty dollar Grade 1 deadbolt on a reinforced one.
They are also not simpler. Every connected lock adds a battery, firmware, a radio, an app, an account and a company that has to stay in business. Each of those is a way for the door to stop working that a piece of brass does not have.
And they are not private. A lock that logs entries is a record of when your house is empty, held by somebody else.
The failure modes nobody advertises
Batteries. Every smart lock runs on batteries and every one of them will eventually be flat. Good models warn for weeks and have a physical key override or external contacts to jump them. Buy one of those. A lock with no override and a flat battery is a locksmith call.
The app and the account. Firmware updates break things. Companies get acquired and shut services down. A lock that depends on a cloud service depends on that service existing.
Cold. Battery capacity falls sharply below freezing, and outdoor keypads in a hard winter fail earlier than the label suggests.
Worn keypads. On a keypad used daily for years, the four digits in the code wear visibly. Change the code periodically, or choose a model that requires random digits before the real code.
And installation. Many smart locks are sensitive to door alignment because the motor has limited torque. A door that needs a shove to lock with a key will simply fail to lock with a motor.
Keypad, app or fingerprint
A keypad deadbolt with no connectivity is the sweet spot for most homes. Codes, no keys, no app, no account, no cloud, batteries that last a year or more. Around a hundred to two hundred dollars fitted. It removes the hidden key problem and the lockout problem, which is most of what people actually wanted.
A connected lock adds remote unlocking, schedules, notifications and integration with a wider system. Worth it if you genuinely manage access remotely, and unnecessary complexity if you do not.
Fingerprint readers are convenient and variable. Readers struggle with wet, cold, dirty or worn fingertips, which is precisely the condition of hands arriving at a front door. Treat the fingerprint as the fast path and make sure there is a code or a key behind it.
Whatever you choose, keep one mechanical key that works, stored somewhere sensible off the property. Every smart lock eventually has a day where it does not work.
What a locksmith would fit
Ask a locksmith what is on their own front door and the answer is usually less exciting than the catalogue.
A Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt with a one inch throw. A reinforced strike box with four three inch screws into the stud. Two three inch screws per hinge. A door that is solid rather than hollow core. A gap tight enough that a pry bar has nowhere to start.
Then, if the household benefits from it, a keypad on top of that.
The order matters. The strike plate first, because it is ten dollars and it is where doors actually fail. The lock grade second. The smart features last, because they solve a convenience problem rather than a security one.
Do it in that order and a smart lock is a good purchase. Do it in the other order and it is an expensive way to keep the same weak door.
Common questions
Can a smart lock be hacked
Remote attacks on mainstream locks are rare and mostly theoretical. The realistic risks are far more ordinary. A flat battery, a shared code nobody revoked, a worn keypad and a weak strike plate.
What happens when the battery dies
It depends on the model. Better ones warn for weeks and offer a physical key override or external contacts to power the lock temporarily. Choose one of those and keep a key off site.
Are smart locks harder to pick
A keypad only model has no keyway to pick, which removes that attack. Models with a key override are only as pick resistant as that cylinder, which is often a low grade one.
Will a smart lock fit my door
Most retrofit onto a standard deadbolt bore, but they are sensitive to alignment because the motor has limited torque. If the door needs a shove to lock now, fix the alignment first.
Does insurance care
Insurers generally specify a lock standard rather than a technology. Check that the model carries the grade or standard your policy names, and keep the documentation.
