Does O'Reilly Copy Car Keys?
- O'Reilly's official store services page does not list key copying, key cutting or key programming.
- O'Reilly does carry keyless remote replacements and fob cases. It said so on its own Facebook page in 2013.
- Many of these remotes program through the port under your dash, but only if you still have one working original key or fob.
- A remote that comes with a blank key does not make that key work. The blade must be cut, and a chip key must also be paired with the car.
- For a true spare, an automotive locksmith comes to you and often costs less than the dealer.
- Call your local store before you drive over. Store services vary, and O'Reilly says so about other services on the same page.
What O'Reilly Actually Offers in the Store
We list locksmiths across the country, and the auto parts store question comes up all the time. People see a parts counter with a lot of gear and assume it has a key machine. So we checked the source instead of guessing.
On October 13, 2026 we opened the O'Reilly store services page. It lists check engine light reading, battery testing, starter and alternator testing, wiper and bulb installation, oil and battery recycling, the loaner tool program, brake drum and rotor resurfacing, custom hydraulic hoses and custom paint mixing. That is ten services. Keys are not one of them.
We also opened a single store page, the Moreno Valley, California store, which ranked on the first page of Google for this exact question. Its own list of services had no key work on it either.
So the honest answer is that key copying is not something O'Reilly offers as a company. If one store near you has a key machine, treat that as a local extra and call to confirm before you drive.
What O'Reilly Sells for Keys and Fobs
The store does not copy keys, but it does sell parts that people use to replace a lost or broken remote. In a post dated July 13, 2013, O'Reilly told its followers that it carries keyless remote replacements, and it linked a video on swapping a broken fob case.
The remotes on parts store shelves are often made by Dorman. We read two of Dorman's own product pages to see what they really do.
- A GM remote, part 99352. It comes with a programmer that plugs into the OBD II port under the dash. Dorman says you must have at least one original key or fob, and the car must have come with keyless entry from the factory. The box lists the remote, instructions and the programmer. No key blade.
- A Nissan and Infiniti remote, part 99159. Same plug in programmer and the same one original key rule. This one includes a blank key that can be cut to match your original.
Read that second one closely. A blank key is not a copy. It is uncut metal. Somebody with a key machine still has to cut it, and if your car uses a chip key, that chip has to be paired with the car before the engine will start.

Fob Cases Are the Cheap Win
If your fob still works but the shell cracked or the buttons wore through, you may only need a new case. Consumer Reports bought a replacement shell for a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze for $19.95, moved the circuit board and battery over with a thin screwdriver, and had a working fob in about two minutes with no programming.

Where to Get a Car Key Copied Instead
The right place depends on the key, not the store. Here is how the main choices line up.
| Your key | O'Reilly | Key kiosk | Automotive locksmith | Dealer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain metal key, no chip | No listed service | Often | Yes | Yes |
| Chip key that turns in the ignition | No listed service | Check the kiosk list | Usually | Yes |
| Key with lock and unlock buttons | Sells some remotes you program yourself | Check the kiosk list | Usually | Yes |
| Push button smart key | Sells some remotes for certain cars | Check the kiosk list | Many makes | Yes |
| Every key lost | No | No | Yes, at the car | Yes, often needs a tow |
A key kiosk is the machine you see near the door at some big stores. Minute Key, which runs kiosks at select Home Depot stores, lets you search by year, make and model to see if it has your key in stock. If your car is not on its list, it cannot make the key. Check that list before you go.

An automotive locksmith is the one choice that covers every row. On October 13, 2026 our directory listed 979 automotive locksmiths in 367 cities across 37 states. They carry cutting and programming tools in the van, so they come to the car. That matters most when you have no working key left.

What a Spare Key Really Costs
Store shelf prices look cheap until you add cutting and programming. These are real bills and quotes that Consumer Reports collected while it bought and programmed fobs.
Consumer Reports says a new fob runs from 50 dollars to as much as 400 dollars by brand, plus another 50 to 100 dollars for programming and a mechanical backup key. The Honda Pilot spare above saved 73 dollars over what a local Honda dealer quoted for the same work. The locksmith in that report said he can usually come in 30 to 50 percent under the dealer.
The trap is the cheap part with an expensive second step. The same report bought an official Hyundai fob online for $79.95, then paid the dealer $120 to program it. If a remote from any store needs a dealer or locksmith to finish the job, add that cost before you buy. Our car key replacement cost guide has the full price picture.
Before You Buy a Remote at Any Parts Store
- Count your working keys. Plug in remotes like Dorman's need at least one original. Many cars that let owners program their own fobs want two, as Consumer Reports found for GM and Chrysler.
- Check how the car starts. A key you turn is the easy case. Push button start is the hardest case to do yourself.
- Match the part to your exact car. Year, make, model and trim all matter. A remote that looks right can still be wrong.
- Ask who cuts the blade. If the box has a blank key, find out where you will get it cut before you pay.
- Ask about returns. Ask the counter about the return policy for opened electronics before you tear the package.
If the steps feel shaky, our post on who can program a key fob for free walks through the onboard routine and when it works.
What Most Answers Get Wrong
When we searched this question on Google on October 13, 2026, the top result was an O'Reilly Facebook post from 2013 about fob cases. Most of the rest were single store pages that never mention keys at all. Nobody said the plain thing. O'Reilly sells key parts, not key copies. If you have a working key and the right remote, you may finish the job yourself. If you need a blade cut, a chip paired or every key replaced, skip the parts store and call a pro.

Common Questions
Does O'Reilly copy car keys?
Not as a listed service. O'Reilly's store services page, checked October 13, 2026, lists ten services and none of them is key copying, cutting or programming. Call your local store if you want to be sure, then use a locksmith, a key kiosk or the dealer.
Does O'Reilly make key fobs?
It sells them. O'Reilly carries replacement keyless remotes and fob cases, many made by Dorman. It does not list a service to make or copy a fob for you, so you program it yourself if the remote allows it.
Does O'Reilly Auto Parts reprogram key fobs?
Programming is not on O'Reilly's list of store services. Some remotes it sells come with a programmer that plugs into the port under your dash. Dorman says you need at least one working original key or fob for that to work.
Can I get a blank key from O'Reilly cut somewhere else?
Usually yes. A locksmith or a hardware store key machine can cut a blade to match your original if they have the right pattern. If it is a chip key, it also has to be paired with the car before it will start the engine.
Who is cheaper for a spare car key, a parts store or a locksmith?
A parts store remote is cheaper on the shelf, but it only covers the part. Consumer Reports had a locksmith cut and program a Honda Pilot spare for $125 all in, 73 dollars less than the local dealer quote. Add cutting and programming before you compare.
Where can I copy a car key with a chip in it?
An automotive locksmith or the dealer can almost always do it. Some key kiosks can copy chip keys for listed models, so search the kiosk's list by year, make and model first.
